Unstoppable Domains Axes Web3 Domain Plans Over Cost Concerns

Unstoppable Domains has canceled its plans to register web3 extensions as official top-level domains through ICANN, citing high compliance and bidding costs.

The company's founder, Matthew Gould, said that web3 domain demand is 'small' and 'niche,' pointing to sales data rather than future projections. Unstoppable had initially committed to pursuing recognition for .Crypto.NFT, and other extensions in February, but the deadline has passed without action.

Unstoppable will refund customers who bought domains that missed the ICANN window, but some holders dispute which purchases qualify. The company still supports outside ICANN bids, including Telegram's .gram application, and remains active as a service provider for other organizations chasing top-level domain recognition.
