Unstoppable Domains Drops ICANN Bid Over Integration Rules
Unstoppable Domains has dropped its bid to integrate nine Web3 top-level domains (TLDs) into the conventional internet Domain Name System (DNS), including .crypto and .wallet, citing conflicting integration requirements from ICANN.
The company announced August 25 that it would not proceed with applications for .crypto.wallet.polygon.nft.bitcoin.dao.unstoppable.zil, and .blockchain due to ICANN's planned integration framework. This framework would require all names within an integrated namespace to also be registered in DNS and paid for, disclosing information required for conventional domain registration.
This creates a problem for Unstoppable's existing base of more than 4 million Web3 names, many of which were purchased before the company announced plans to seek ICANN recognition. The company is now continuing with five other ICANN applications: .agi.robot.gram.hub, and .xmr.
Unstoppable said it won't force its users into the DNS system or bill them for it, offering refunds to customers who purchased affected extensions after March 5, 2025. The company is also continuing with its existing Web3 domain model, keeping blockchain-native namespaces intact while pursuing conventional DNS integration only for newer extensions.
