Upbit Delists Bonk Pair Amid Security Concerns, Memecoin Price Plunges
The memecoin sector has been relatively quiet in recent days, but one exception was Bonk [BONK], which saw significant losses after being delisted by Upbit. According to CoinMarketCap data, the top 10 memecoins by market cap have moved less than 3% over the past week, with BONK being one of the two exceptions. The meme sector's collective performance was up only 1.1%, compared to Bitcoin's [BTC] +2.9% gain.
The Upbit delisting news came just over 12 hours ago and led to a 14% price drop for BONK. The exchange cited 'numerous shortcomings and a potential for user harm' as the reason for the delisting, which was influenced by security incidents weighing heavily on the public mind.
Coinalyze data showed an uptick in Open Interest during the trading sessions when BONK prices were falling. The 1-day chart reinforced the bearish long-term outlook and highlighted the enthusiasm of the bears, with a swing structure that has been bearish in recent months.
