Upbit's Dominance Raises Concerns Over South Korea's Crypto Market Stability

Share

South Korea's largest cryptocurrency exchange, Upbit, dominates corporate and foreign trading in the country. According to data from the Financial Supervisory Service (FSS), obtained by lawmaker Park Sang-hyuk, Upbit holds a significant majority of corporate and foreign accounts, as well as custodial assets.

The data reveals that out of 6,590 corporate accounts across the top five exchanges in South Korea, 62.4% are held on Upbit. The total value of these assets is approximately 43.38 billion won ($32.5 million). This concentration underscores Upbit's dominant position in the market.

The FSS has been increasing oversight of exchanges to ensure compliance with anti-money laundering (AML) and know-your-customer (KYC) requirements. The high concentration of assets on one exchange may raise questions about market stability and the need for diversified infrastructure.
