US Abandons AI Regulation Amid China Tech Ambitions
The US government has declined to regulate AI development, leaving the burden of AI safety on chief executives. President Donald Trump argued that slowing down AI model development would give China a lead in the race for technological advancement.
In a statement, House Speaker Mike Johnson said Congress has already set guardrails and the responsibility lies with the labs. David Sacks, former White House AI adviser, urged companies not to ask permission but to take the initiative themselves.
The China argument broke on Sunday when Sacks stated that China is unlikely to join a global agreement. Meanwhile, Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for a consensus-based global AI governance framework at the BRICS summit in New Delhi.
