US Approves Crypto ETF Options for Institutional Traders

Crypto ETF options have revolutionized the way institutional and retail traders interact with the crypto market. The US Securities and Exchange Commission approved options on spot Bitcoin ETFs in late 2024, and options on spot Ethereum ETFs followed in 2025.

This marked a significant shift from trading perpetual futures on offshore exchanges or using limited options contracts available on platforms like Deribit. For the first time, traders with standard brokerage accounts could buy call options on Bitcoin exposure using the same interface, clearing infrastructure, and regulatory protections as options on the S&P 500.

Crypto ETF options are standardized contracts that give holders the right to buy or sell shares of a cryptocurrency exchange-traded fund at a set price before a set date. Call options profit when the underlying ETF rises, while put options profit when it falls.
