US Bank Crosses Borders with Live Stablecoin Transaction
U.S. Bank has successfully completed a live cross-border transaction using its proprietary stablecoin, USBDC. The September 9 transaction involved moving value between bank entities in North America and Europe on the Stellar network.
The pilot tested U.S. Bank's Digital Asset Platform, which is designed to issue, manage, and transfer tokenized assets while interacting with blockchain networks.
The platform has several key features, including minting (creating USBDC backed by US dollars), payments and redemption, freezing, and clawback capabilities. The latter two are particularly relevant for a bank-issued asset, as they provide tools to respond to fraud, sanctions requirements, legal orders, and operational errors.
The use case for USBDC may not be about sending payments slightly faster, but rather changing when corporate liquidity can move. Cross-border treasury operations remain constrained by banking hours, settlement windows, and the need to coordinate cash across jurisdictions.
U.S. Bank is evaluating applications such as enhanced liquidity management, collateral mobility, and cross-border treasury operations for the technology.
