US Bank Regulator Eases Rules for Crypto Engagement
The US Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) has lifted restrictions on how U.S. banks can engage with cryptocurrency and stablecoins.
Banks are now allowed to manage crypto assets, participate in stablecoin activities, and node verification networks without special pre-approval, eliminating a previous requirement for specific conditions before engaging in crypto-related activities.
According to Acting Comptroller of the Currency Rodney E. Hood, banks will still need to demonstrate appropriate risk controls, with the OCC expecting 'the same strong risk management controls' as traditional bank activities.
This policy change reduces administrative burdens for financial institutions interested in cryptocurrency operations and reverses a directive issued during the Biden Administration, which required explicit regulatory clearance before participating in cryptocurrency activities.
