US Banking Regulator Eases Crypto Restrictions
The US banking regulator has removed restrictions on banks engaging in cryptocurrency and stablecoin activities. The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) has eliminated a requirement that forced banks to meet specific conditions before participating in crypto-related activities.
This marks a significant shift from earlier policies, which were implemented during the Biden Administration. Under the previous directive, banks needed to obtain explicit regulatory clearance and demonstrate controls in place to conduct cryptocurrency activities safely and soundly.
The OCC has stated that banks will still need to have strong risk management controls in place for novel bank activities, similar to traditional ones. This policy change aims to reduce administrative burdens on financial institutions interested in cryptocurrency operations.
