US Banking Regulator Eases Crypto Restrictions for Banks
US banking regulator, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC), has relaxed restrictions on banks engaging in cryptocurrency activities. The new policy allows financial institutions to manage crypto assets and participate in stablecoin activities without prior approval.
This marks a significant shift from previous policies that required banks to meet specific conditions before participating in cryptocurrency-related activities. According to Acting Comptroller of the Currency Rodney E. Hood, 'banks are expected to have strong risk management controls in place to support novel bank activities as they do for traditional ones.'
The OCC has eliminated a requirement that forced banks to obtain explicit regulatory clearance before engaging in crypto-related activities. This reduction in administrative burdens is expected to encourage more financial institutions to explore cryptocurrency operations.
