US Banking Regulator Lifts Crypto Engagement Restrictions
The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency has relaxed its rules for banks to engage in cryptocurrency activities. Financial institutions can now manage crypto assets, participate in stablecoin activities, and verify node networks without needing special approval.
This change reverses a previous policy that required banks to meet specific conditions before engaging in crypto-related activities. The OCC no longer requires banks to demonstrate controls for these novel bank activities.
The regulatory shift aims to reduce administrative burdens for banks interested in cryptocurrency operations. However, banks will still need to show they have appropriate risk management controls in place.
