US Banks Unveil Nationwide Blockchain Network for 2027 Launch
A bank-led consortium called BankChain Alliance is planning to launch a nationwide blockchain network in 2027. The alliance, formed by 39 US state banking associations, aims to create an industry-owned blockchain network for banks to support various capabilities such as smart payment tools, tokenized deposits, stablecoins, and automated settlement.
The planned use cases include programmable payments, tokenized deposits, and stablecoins, with a focus on interoperability with other blockchains. BankChain Alliance is currently selecting a technology partner to help achieve this goal.
While the announcement does not name specific banks that have committed to join, it mentions that participating associations represent thousands of financial institutions across the United States. The consortium plans to invite banks nationwide to take ownership of stakes in the network.
The launch of BankChain Alliance's blockchain network is part of a broader trend in which US banking consortia are developing onchain rails for regulated deposits and payments. This effort aims to bring onchain settlement closer to mainstream bank rails, with a focus on interoperability and scalability.
