US Bill Seeks to Establish Strategic Bitcoin Reserve Within Treasury Department
A proposed bill in the US House of Representatives could have significant implications for Bitcoin's future. Bill H.R. 8957, known as the 'American Reserve Modernization Act of 2026', aims to establish a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve within the US Treasury Department.
The reserve would store Bitcoins held by the federal government and would be managed by the Treasury Secretary. The bill also proposes creating a separate 'Digital Asset Stock' for other crypto assets, not just Bitcoin.
According to lawmakers, having a Bitcoin reserve could strengthen the US dollar's position globally and enhance the country's financial resilience. The transactions related to the reserve would need to be transparent and auditable, with public verification of reserve assets possible through a 'reserve proof' system.
If the bill passes the House Financial Services Committee on Wednesday, it will move to the House of Representatives General Assembly.
