US Citizen Indicted by Israel for Alleged Crypto-Funded Espionage Ties
Israeli authorities have indicted Eli Lavon, a 21-year-old US citizen, on espionage charges tied to activities conducted on behalf of Iranian intelligence. According to the indictment, Lavon was recruited by Iranian operatives through Telegram job advertisements in late 2025 and compensated with approximately $1,379 in cryptocurrency for completing assignments that included low-level surveillance and sending signaling messages.
The compensation method of choice was cryptocurrency, which is allegedly used as a payment mechanism in over 60 prosecutions across three years. Blockchain analytics firm TRM Labs has noted that digital asset payments can be sent across borders without routing through traditional banking infrastructure, making them harder to flag through conventional anti-money laundering systems.
Lavon's case marks the first time a US national has been prosecuted in Israel's broader crackdown on Iran-linked espionage. Since 2023, at least 60 Israelis have been indicted for similar espionage activities. Multiple arrests in 2025 involved Israeli residents who carried out surveillance tasks and received payment in cryptocurrency.
TRM Labs notes that the pseudonymous nature of many blockchain transactions provides 'just enough cover' for small-value payments to low-level operatives. However, every payment is theoretically traceable due to the permanent recording on a public ledger.
