US CPI Rises 0.4%, Clouding Fed Outlook and Impacting Crypto
The US Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose by 0.4% in August, matching economists' expectations and lifting annual inflation to 3.4%, unchanged from July.
Gasoline prices were responsible for more than one-third of the headline increase, rising 3.9% during the month.
The core CPI reading, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, rose 0.3% in August, above the monthly forecast of 0.2%, but annual core inflation eased to 2.4%.
This mixed report has raised questions about the Federal Reserve's outlook on monetary policy, with some analysts arguing that a rapid shift towards easier policy may be harder to justify without further evidence of cooling inflation.
Crypto traders are now watching for changes in rate expectations and short-dated Treasury yields, which can impact the cost of dollar funding and how markets value assets reliant on liquidity and leverage.
