US Crypto Bill Vote Looms as India Weighs Comprehensive VDA Framework
The US Senate is set to vote on the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act on September 15, 2026. This move marks a key legislative step for global crypto regulation and provides a reference point for other nations balancing innovation with oversight.
In India, the current regulatory environment for virtual digital assets (VDAs) relies heavily on tax and administrative measures rather than a comprehensive statutory framework. The Finance Act 2022 introduced a 30% tax on income from VDA transfer and a 1% TDS on transactions, but these measures lack consumer protection and market integrity.
The Indian Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance has recognized this gap and recommended a thorough examination of a formal statutory framework for VDAs. To bridge the current regulatory void, the committee suggested an interim mechanism where recognized self-regulatory organizations (SROs) could oversee industry standards under the guidance of a designated regulator.
The US legislation may not automatically dictate policy in India, but it provides a significant attempt by US policymakers to define jurisdiction over digital assets and provide a clearer structure for the market. As major global economies push toward legislative certainty, the spotlight has turned to India's timeline for drafting a comprehensive VDA framework.
