US Crypto Industry Pressures Senate to Pass Clarity Act Amid Regulatory Uncertainty
The US crypto industry is calling on the Senate to hurry up and pass the CLARITY Act, a bill aimed at providing clarity on market structure for digital assets. In a joint letter sent on January 24th, three major organizations, the Crypto Council for Innovation, the Digital Chamber, and the Blockchain Association, urged Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R) and Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D) to bring the bill to the floor for a vote.
The CLARITY Act aims to distinguish digital assets as either securities or commodities and allocate supervisory authority between the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The bill also seeks to establish an integrated regulatory framework for exchanges and broker-dealers, addressing regulatory gaps and uncertainty.
The industry is concerned that prolonged regulatory uncertainty will harm the sector. With the bill reportedly still short of the 60-vote threshold required for passage, the Senate leadership's agenda coordination and pace of bipartisan negotiations in the coming weeks will determine whether the CLARITY Act makes it onto a voting schedule.
