US Crypto Regulatory Clarity on Horizon: September 15 or 16
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong says that US crypto regulatory clarity could arrive in September either through a Senate vote or new CFTC and SEC rules. The CLARITY Act, which aims to establish a federal crypto market-structure framework, has been stalled in the Senate due to disagreements over ethics provisions.
Armstrong pointed out two possible outcomes: if the Senate clears its 60-vote hurdle on September 15, the bill will advance; alternatively, new regulations from the CFTC and SEC could be implemented on September 16. CFTC Chair Michael Selig has stated that his agency is preparing to move forward with rulemaking if Congress cannot pass the Act.
Selig noted that while passing bipartisan legislation remains the preferred path, it would set a more permanent statutory framework. In contrast, agency rules operate under existing authority and are more susceptible to future policy changes.
