US Cryptocurrency Regulation Bill Stuck in Senate Amid Uncertainty
The United States is set to introduce its first comprehensive federal framework for cryptocurrencies and digital assets with the passage of the CLARITY Act, which aims to bring clarity to a previously grey area.
The bill divides digital assets into three categories: digital commodities, investment contract assets, and authorized payment stablecoins. This will help regulators determine which agency has jurisdiction over each asset, preventing conflicts like the one between the SEC and CFTC in the past.
If a compromise is not reached by August 8, the likelihood of the CLARITY Act passing in 2026 will significantly decrease. The bill also introduces practical requirements for market participants, including registration with the CFTC, customer identification, anti-money laundering measures, and segregation of client assets.
