US Debt Surge Could Boost Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Zcash
The US government's rising debt has led Grayscale to predict that three cryptocurrencies could gain in value. According to an analysis by Grayscale Head of Research Zach Pandl, unchecked government debt growth undermines the credibility of fiat currencies and drives investors to seek out alternative stores of value.
Pandl believes that the 'debasement trade' will primarily benefit Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), and Zcash (ZEC). He notes that Bitcoin presents a strong scarcity argument due to its programmed maximum supply and lack of government issuer, but its store-of-value role is still debated due to volatility and sensitivity to financial conditions.
Ethereum provides a decentralized settlement network, while Zcash combines a Bitcoin-like design with optional privacy features. Grayscale views the Treasury's recent announcement to buy more longer-dated securities as a response to rising yields rather than a solution to structural deficits.
