US Debt Tops $40 Trillion, Strengthening Case for Bitcoin

BlackRock's digital assets chief Robert Mitchnick believes that rising concerns over U.S. borrowing and deficits are pushing investors towards alternative stores of value like Bitcoin and gold. The U.S. national debt has crossed $40 trillion, reinforcing concerns over borrowing and money creation that Mitchnick describes as Bitcoin's most important fundamental driver.

Mitchnick pointed out that despite the stalled CLARITY Act, which affects the broader crypto industry, Bitcoin already has greater regulatory clarity and adoption. BlackRock's Bitcoin products hold 771,641 BTC worth almost $61 billion, while IBIT continues to lead spot ETF inflows with $5 billion in swaps.

The supply barrier between $81,000 and $86,000 is seen as a key hurdle for Bitcoin to challenge its January high. Mitchnick also mentioned that custody incidents and physical-security risks have pushed some holders towards ETFs instead of self-custody, visible in fund flows.
