US Dumps $400M into Aussie Scandium Mine to Reduce Chinese Dominance

The US Department of Defense has pledged $400 million to an Australian mining company called Sunrise Energy Metals to build the world's first primary scandium mine. The Syerston Scandium Project in New South Wales is part of a broader effort by Western governments to reduce their reliance on China for critical minerals.

Scandium is a key component in the production of lightweight, high-strength aluminum alloys used in aerospace and defense applications. Its extraction has been a challenge due to Chinese control over 70% of global rare earth mining and over 90% of processing capacity.

The US-Australia Framework for Securing Supply in Mining Critical Minerals, signed in October 2025, aims to create $2 billion in financing to build mineral supply chains outside of Chinese influence. The Syerston project is one of several initiatives flowing from this framework, including Arafura's Nolans rare earths project.

The Pentagon's involvement through the Office of Strategic Capital is significant, as it indicates that Washington views supply chain diversification as a national security issue.
