US Exchanges Shut Down for Labor Day as Crypto Markets Keep Trading
The Labor Day trading schedule for 2026 has been announced, with major US equity exchanges observing the federal holiday on Monday, September 7. The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and Nasdaq will suspend operations for the day, resuming normal trading hours at 9:30 a.m. Eastern Time on Tuesday, September 8.
Bond markets and over-the-counter (OTC) trading platforms across the United States will also be closed, mirroring the federal holiday closure. However, cryptocurrency trading platforms remain operational around the clock without any interruptions.
Canada's Toronto Stock Exchange will join the US exchanges in observing Labor Day, while major international venues such as the London Stock Exchange, Shanghai Stock Exchange, and Hong Kong's Stock Exchange will maintain regular operations.
The S&P 500 has delivered positive returns for equity investors in August 2026, with a 2.6% monthly gain. However, historical patterns suggest caution ahead, with September historically being a challenging month for stocks, with an average decline of 2.7% over the trailing five-year period.
