US Faces Debt Crisis in Three Years Without Fiscal Reforms

Ray Dalio, billionaire founder of Bridgewater Associates, has sounded the alarm on the US government's financial situation. He warns that without significant changes, the country is on track to face a full-blown debt crisis within three years.

Dalio's concerns are based on arithmetic: the US government is projected to spend around $7 trillion in fiscal 2026 while bringing in roughly $5 trillion to $5.6 trillion in revenue. This gap, nearly double what Dalio considers sustainable, would leave the country facing a daunting debt burden.

The 'Big Debt Cycle' framework outlined by Dalio suggests that when government spending exceeds 3% of GDP for an extended period, it can lead to a debt crisis. The US government's current deficit is projected at approximately 5.8% of GDP, putting the country in the danger zone.

Dalio emphasizes the importance of simultaneous action on three fronts: spending cuts, revenue increases, and lower interest rates to reduce the cost of servicing existing debt. He has expressed support for a House bill that would cap the federal deficit at or below 3% of GDP.
