US Government Unlikely to Buy More Bitcoin for Strategic Reserve
The Strategic Bitcoin Reserve (SBR) is not what many crypto investors expected it to be.
According to Bitget CEO Gracy Chen, the US government is unlikely to purchase more Bitcoin for its SBR before President Trump leaves office.
This is despite the executive order establishing the reserve in March 2025 and Trump's vocal pro-crypto posturing.
The SBR holds an estimated 198,000 $BTC, valued at roughly $17.3 billion, which represents approximately 1% of Bitcoin's total circulating supply.
The critical detail is that the reserve is limited exclusively to Bitcoin seized through civil and criminal forfeiture proceedings, with no new acquisitions using taxpayer funds allowed.
This means the government will hold what it has but not show up on exchanges to accumulate more.
