US Government's Bitcoin Reserve Unlikely to Buy More
The US government's Strategic Bitcoin Reserve is unlikely to make any open-market purchases before President Donald Trump's term ends in January 2029, according to Bitget CEO Gracy Chen.
Chen's view is based on the executive order establishing the reserve, which limits it to Bitcoin seized or forfeited through criminal and civil asset proceedings. No taxpayer money goes into the reserve, and no market orders are placed.
The reserve was formalized in March 2025, when the government signed an executive order to keep existing holdings of Bitcoin accumulated through law enforcement actions. The order also prohibits the government from selling its holdings, creating a one-way door for Bitcoin.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has voiced support for Bitcoin as a strategic asset but has not announced any acquisition plans. Administration officials have privately acknowledged the reserve's limited scale and described its current importance as largely symbolic.
