US House Committee Plans Crypto Tax Bill Markup in September
The US House Ways and Means Committee is planning to hold a markup on crypto tax bills in September, marking a significant step forward for digital asset regulations. The committee's chairman, Jason Smith (R-MO), has framed the effort around competitiveness, arguing that clear 'rules of the road' are necessary for the US to maintain its leadership position.
The legislative package includes several key measures aimed at reducing the paperwork burden and tax complexities for crypto holders. Two notable bills are H.R. 9178 and H.R. 9175, which would carve out relief for small transactions and allow recipients of mining and staking rewards to defer their tax hit.
Industry groups have supported advancing key provisions related to mining and staking without changes. For retail investors and everyday crypto users, the proposed exemption for small transactions could remove a significant friction point in digital asset adoption. The deferral provision would also bring crypto staking closer to how other income-generating assets are treated in traditional finance.
