US-Iran Tensions Spark Sharp Decline in Bitcoin Value
Geopolitical tensions have returned to financial markets after nearly a month of calm, causing a sharp decline in Bitcoin's value. On Sunday evening, Bitcoin jumped past $79,000 but quickly fell below $77,000 within an hour as the US and Iran resumed fighting.
The attacks, which included strikes against military targets stationed in Jordan, sent oil prices soaring with Brent crude surging by nearly 3% to over $90 per barrel. This increase has sparked concerns about another energy-driven inflation shock, particularly after Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's hawkish speech at Jackson Hole on Friday.
The sharp move south led to over $400 million in liquidations, with Ethereum taking a bigger hit than Bitcoin. According to CoinGlass, ETH longs are responsible for almost $100 million in lost positions, while BTC longs account for just $62.60 million.
Wintermute's transfer of 5,100 BTC worth nearly $400 million to Binance over the past two days likely contributed to the decline in Bitcoin's value. The entity had taken similar actions last week, resulting in another leg down for BTC and altcoins.
