US Lags Behind G20 Nations on Crypto Trading Rules
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong has spoken out about the need for clearer regulations on cryptocurrency trading in the United States. In a recent post on social media platform X, Armstrong noted that while many countries have implemented regulatory frameworks for crypto, the US lags behind.
The UK, for instance, introduced its financial services and markets framework earlier this year, which includes provisions for stablecoins and crypto trading. The European Union's Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulation is set to be fully implemented by the end of 2024, creating a unified licensing system across member states.
The CLARITY Act, introduced in the Senate, aims to provide regulatory clarity for digital assets by classifying them as commodities or securities. Armstrong called on the Senate to pass the bill on August 15, aligning with their session schedule. However, the bill's fate remains uncertain.
Proponents argue that clear rules would protect consumers, reduce fraud, and keep innovation within the US. Critics express concerns about regulatory overreach or stifling decentralized finance.
