US Lawmakers Probe American Firms Using Chinese AI Models

US lawmakers have launched an investigation into American companies using AI models developed by Chinese firms. The probe, led by the House Committee on Homeland Security and the House Select Committee on China, aims to uncover the use of AI models from companies like Moonshot AI and Alibaba's Qwen.

The affected companies include DoorDash, Coinbase, Airbnb, and Siemens, all of which have publicly acknowledged their use of Chinese AI models. According to DoorDash, these models offer superior quality at a lower price compared to American alternatives.

The investigation wants to know the origins of training data, the volume of data transferred to Chinese firms, and internal risk assessments conducted by these companies before adopting the models.

For crypto investors, Coinbase's involvement in the probe is particularly noteworthy. The exchange has reportedly pivoted toward Chinese AI models for operational efficiency, raising concerns about potential security risks.

The Trump administration is considering adding certain Chinese AI labs to the Entity List, which would impose stricter oversight on firms employing these AI models. If Moonshot AI or other Chinese AI developers land on this list, US companies currently using their models would need to find alternatives.
