US Leads Global Charge on Bitcoin Reserves as Sovereignty Concerns Grow
The concept of a Bitcoin strategic reserve has been gaining traction globally, with at least a dozen countries exploring the idea. A Bitcoin strategic reserve is essentially a government-held stockpile of Bitcoin treated as a national asset, similar to gold or foreign currency reserves.
The United States was one of the first countries to implement such a reserve, signing an executive order in March 2025 to create the US Strategic Bitcoin Reserve. The initial reserve was seeded with approximately 200,000 BTC, valued at around $17 billion at the time of signing.
According to the executive order, the government cannot sell any Bitcoin from the reserve and must develop 'budget-neutral strategies' for acquiring additional Bitcoin without drawing on taxpayer funds. This has sparked debate among critics who argue that Bitcoin is too volatile to serve as a reserve asset and that government holdings concentrate systemic risk.
