US Power Grid Under Strain as Crypto Mining Joins Data Centers in Demand Surge
The US power grid is facing unprecedented demand due to a surge in AI data centers, electric vehicles, manufacturing growth, and crypto mining operations. The largest US power grid operators are expanding infrastructure plans to meet this increased demand.
The US Energy Information Administration projects electricity consumption will climb from 4,195 billion kilowatt-hours in 2025 to 4,269 billion kWh in 2026, then to 4,399 billion kWh by 2027. This increase adds a continuous load equivalent to roughly 23 gigawatts.
Utility capital expenditure plans for the next five years are projected to exceed $1.4 trillion. Crypto mining's electricity consumption currently accounts for between 0.6% and 2.3% of overall consumption, but can act as a pressure valve during peak demand periods due to its flexibility.
