US Private Credit Stress Hits Decade High, Raises Bitcoin Concerns
The US private credit market has reached its highest stress levels since 2017, according to recent data from Solve and Fitch. Non-accrual loans, a key indicator of financial distress, have risen to a median of 2.8% of cost across the top 20 listed US Business Development Companies. This marks a significant increase from late March, when the same measure sat at 2%, and is comparable to the stress triggered by the 2017 oil price collapse.
The situation is further complicated by redemption pressure, with some funds receiving withdrawal requests reaching as high as 40% of net asset value, although most gates limit quarterly redemptions to 5%. Jeffrey P. Snider noted that investors are now asking what they actually own due to the lack of warning signs in lending.
The impact on Bitcoin is indirect but significant. As defaults rise and investors become nervous, they may sell liquid assets to raise cash, which can quickly affect Bitcoin's price due to its 24/7 trading and ease of sale through both crypto markets and ETFs.
