US Regulators Explore Compute Derivatives Amid BTC Miner AI Push

The US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has opened a consultation on compute derivatives, seeking feedback on market size and liquidity. The CFTC Chairman Michael Selig views a robust derivatives market for compute as crucial to US competitiveness in artificial intelligence.

The proposed futures would allow cloud operators to hedge revenue against falling GPU rental rates, while companies buying compute could protect themselves from rising costs. Intercontinental Exchange is developing futures linked to GPU compute indexes, and CME Group plans to launch H100 Rental Index Futures on October 5.

BTC miners are increasingly turning their power infrastructure towards AI in search of higher returns than mining alone. Riot Platforms has arranged access to $573 million of debt financing for a data-center project at its Rockdale site.

VanEck's Matthew Sigel argues that miners are being valued around the capital required for their AI projects rather than Bitcoin alone. He estimates that Riot would need about $475 million of equity for its visible Rockdale AI pipeline, while CleanSpark could require roughly $385 million for Sandersville.
