The robotaxi market in the US is heating up as Waymo and Zoox aggressively expand into new cities, deploying hundreds of vehicles and racking up ride volumes that would make some traditional taxi fleets jealous. Waymo now averages roughly 500,000 paid rides per week across 11 metropolitan areas.

Zoox has made significant strides in its revenue-generating business, starting to charge customers for rides in Las Vegas on August 10. The company has also received approval from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to deploy up to 2,500 of its purpose-built, steering-wheel-free robotaxis annually over a two-year period.

Waymo's Ojai generation robotaxi is now available for paying riders in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Phoenix, with plans to expand into Austin and Miami. The company has also received authorization from the Nevada Transportation Authority to operate up to 1,000 vehicles in Clark County alone.
