US Secures Control of Venezuela's Massive Oil Reserves: Crypto Implications
The United States has secured control of over 65 billion barrels of Venezuelan oil reserves through an agreement involving Washington, Venezuela, and private businesses. US President Donald Trump described it as the 'biggest oil deal in world history,' which could have a significant impact on global energy markets.
The analysts at the Kobeissi Letter noted that adding control over another 65 billion barrels would bring the combined figure to over 110 billion, roughly 7% of global proven reserves. This would put the US-controlled total ahead of Kuwait's and comparable to the UAE's.
However, there is a catch: those barrels are all reserves, not immediate supply. Venezuela currently produces around 1.2 million barrels per day, a fraction of what its enormous resource base theoretically allows due to years of underinvestment, deteriorating infrastructure, power problems, and other issues.
If Venezuelan supply expands significantly over the coming years and helps decrease oil prices, it could lead to weaker inflationary pressure, which could give the Fed more room to ease monetary policy. This would be considered bullish for crypto, as the asset class tends to benefit from such macro conditions.
