US Seizes $560k in Crypto Donations Meant for Hamas
The US Department of Justice has announced the seizure of over $560,000 in cryptocurrency donations intended for Hamas. The funds were meant to support the militant group's military wing.
In addition to seizing the cryptocurrency, the DOJ also took control of website domains and communication platforms used for fundraising and recruitment. Thousands of individuals who had contacted Hamas with the intention of giving money to the group have had their information obtained by authorities.
Jeanine Pirro, US Attorney for the District of Columbia, stated that 'your networks are not secure, your crypto is vulnerable, and we will not stop until your ability to wage war is defeated.'
Hamas began testing virtual currency fundraising in early 2019 through its Qassam Brigades, with officials boasting that it would be untraceable. The group used Telegram channels and direct online fundraising to solicit donations.
