US Senate Advances Crypto Clarity Act in Boost to Industry
The US Senate is moving to advance the Clarity Act, which aims to establish a comprehensive regulatory framework for cryptocurrencies. The bill's progress has been seen as a major policy victory for President Donald Trump and the digital asset industry.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune filed a motion on Saturday to set up a key procedural vote on the Clarity Act when the Senate returns from its August recess in mid-September. This move could pave the way for a full Senate vote on the legislation, which needs at least 60 votes to advance.
The Clarity Act would establish the first broad federal regulatory framework for the US cryptocurrency industry, setting out rules for determining when digital tokens should be classified as securities or commodities and clarifying the responsibilities of federal regulators. The bill has drawn opposition from Democrats seeking stronger safeguards and from banks concerned about provisions that could allow cryptocurrency companies to compete directly with them for customer deposits.
The crypto industry has pushed for the legislation, arguing that clearer rules would reduce regulatory uncertainty and encourage wider adoption of digital assets. Trump's family has extensive interests in the crypto sector, with over $1.4 billion in income reported from their ventures last year.
