US Senate Banking Committee's CLARITY Act Sparks Controversy Over Crypto Regulation
The debate over how to regulate cryptocurrency in the US has reached a critical juncture, with the Senate Banking Committee's version of the CLARITY Act at the center of the controversy.
SIFMA CEO Kenneth Bentsen recently defended the bill, stating that it contains 'a number of good things.'
However, Senator Chris Van Hollen has criticized the legislation, calling it 'not ready for prime time' and introducing eight separate amendments aimed at addressing transparency and consumer protection concerns.
The CLARITY Act aims to clarify the regulatory framework for cryptocurrency, distinguishing between securities and commodities and establishing clear guidelines for issuance, trading, custody, and safe harbor provisions.
The bill has been met with support from both traditional Wall Street establishments and crypto-native companies, including Franklin Templeton and Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong.
