US Senate Fails to Advance CLARITY Act Amid Digital Asset Price Decline
The US Senate's failure to advance the CLARITY Act has left the country's digital asset regulations in limbo. The bill, which aimed to establish a federal regulatory framework for digital assets, required 60 votes to pass but fell short with 50 votes in favor and 50 against.
The setback occurs with less than 36 days of business before the new session of Congress is sworn in after November's midterm elections. This means the bill will likely not see further action this year.
The bill had stalled previously over proposed ethics provisions that would restrict government officials and their families from issuing or profiting from digital assets while in office. Despite President Donald Trump agreeing to strengthen these restrictions, new opposition emerged on Monday from 18 state attorneys general who argued the bill would weaken states' ability to police crypto fraud and misconduct.
The Senate's failure to advance the CLARITY Act has led to a decline in digital asset prices, with Bitcoin briefly falling below $75,000, down over 5% on the day according to CoinMarketCap.
