US Senate Fails to Reach Agreement on Comprehensive Crypto Regulation
A push for comprehensive cryptocurrency and blockchain market structure legislation in the US Senate has hit a roadblock over ethics rules.
The CLARITY Act, which aims to establish clearer regulatory frameworks for digital assets, was met with resistance from Democrats after they rejected a provision negotiated between the White House and Republican senators.
Lawmakers are now working on revised language that would prohibit senior government officials and their spouses from issuing or sponsoring digital assets while in office. The restrictions would expire in early 2029 and enforcement authority would rest solely with the Department of Justice.
However, Democrats argue that confining enforcement to the Justice Department creates an inherent conflict, particularly under the current administration, and does not adequately reflect prior bipartisan discussions.
