US Senate Gains Momentum Behind Clarity Act as Crypto Regulations Tighten
The US Senate is gaining momentum in support of the CLARITY Act, which aims to tighten regulations on cryptocurrencies and prevent money laundering. Senator Cynthia Lummis is pushing for the legislation, which would empower the Treasury Department to freeze transactions involving crypto assets linked to criminal activity.
The proposed bill would also provide immunity from lawsuits to crypto businesses that freeze suspicious transactions. Additionally, it would expand the application of anti-money laundering (AML) and Bank Secrecy Act (BSA) regulations to cryptocurrency exchanges and decentralized finance (DeFi) systems.
Furthermore, the CLARITY Act allocates $150 million to enhance FinCEN's regulation of digital assets and provides grants for state and local law enforcement agencies to investigate crypto crimes. An information exchange mechanism would also be created among relevant departments to improve coordination in monitoring and combating illicit cryptocurrency use.
