US Senate Votes on Revised CLARITY Act Amid Bipartisan Tensions

The US Senate is set to vote on Tuesday on the revised Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, known as the CLARITY Act. The bill aims to establish a regulatory framework for cryptocurrencies and other digital assets.

The updated text includes 126 substantive changes requested by Democrats, along with new ethics restrictions and narrower protections for blockchain developers. The proposal would impose restrictions on federally elected officials, judges, and their spouses, allowing state attorneys general to enforce ethics requirements involving federal officials.

Some Democrats remain opposed, however, citing unresolved concerns and arguing that the bill is being presented as consumer protection legislation despite those issues. Senator Chris Van Hollen said the bill continued to have significant problems and would leave Americans without stronger protections in digital asset markets if passed in its current form.

The vote on Tuesday is a procedural step rather than a final vote on passage, according to Senate Majority Leader John Thune. The measure could still be amended if senators agree to move it forward, with some Democrats potentially supporting the motion to keep negotiations alive and allow further changes to be considered before final passage.
