US Senators Introduce Bill to Strengthen Crypto Security Against Quantum Threats
Two US senators from opposite sides of the aisle have come together on an issue that could reshape the crypto security landscape: quantum computing. Republican Mike Rounds and Democrat Richard Blumenthal introduced the National Quantum Readiness Act, a bipartisan bill aimed at turning President Trump's quantum technology executive order into binding law.
The legislation codifies key sections of Executive Order 14413, which was signed on June 22, 2026, by requiring federal agencies to develop plans for private sector partnerships and identify next-generation quantum sensor projects. The Department of Defense, Department of Commerce, Department of Energy, and the National Science Foundation are all named as responsible parties.
The bill focuses heavily on two areas: quantum-enabled sensors for national security applications and building domestic supply chains for quantum hardware. It also addresses migration to post-quantum cryptography, which refers to encryption methods designed to withstand attacks from quantum computers.
