US Spot Bitcoin ETFs Attract Record $1B in Inflows Amid Uncertainty
US spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) saw their best week since April, attracting $1 billion in net inflows. According to Bloomberg ETF analyst Eric Balchunas, this is a significant rebound after months of uneven flows.
The demand for these funds has picked up despite ongoing uncertainty around digital asset regulation and the security concerns associated with self-custody. The latter was highlighted by a recent hack involving the Bitcoin hardware wallet Coldcard, which resulted in approximately $116 million worth of BTC being stolen.
Balchunas suggested that this security incident could ultimately strengthen the appeal of spot Bitcoin ETFs among investors who prefer to avoid technical and security responsibilities associated with self-custody. He noted a potential link between the hack and the surge in ETF inflows, although emphasized that correlation does not imply causation.
The term 'Bitcoin's silent IPO' was used by Balchunas to describe the period from October onwards, during which early investors were selling into growing demand from ETFs and other institutional buyers. This distribution has coincided with a deterioration in ETF flows compared with earlier periods of stronger demand, making this week's rebound particularly notable.
