US Strategic Bitcoin Reserve's True Balance Remains a Mystery

President Donald Trump signed an executive order creating the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve in March 2025. The reserve was intended to hold Bitcoin that met certain criteria, including being held by Treasury and not needed for statutory obligations.

However, over a year later, it remains unclear how much Bitcoin the government actually owns. Estimates range from around $12.4 billion to over $20.6 billion, with some trackers suggesting as many as 328,372 BTC in government custody.

The discrepancy arises because of differing definitions and classifications of what constitutes 'government-held' Bitcoin. Some coins may be tied up in court proceedings or investigations, while others may have been seized but not yet forfeited to the government.

One notable example is a 127,271 BTC seizure linked to Chen Zhi, founder and chairman of Prince Group, which could account for a significant portion of the discrepancy. However, this seizure has not yet resulted in a final judgment awarding ownership to the government.
