The US Central Command confirmed that airstrikes were conducted on three Iranian oil tankers on September 5, targeting vessels that transport crude exports for Iran. At least one tanker was permanently disabled near Kharg Island, which is responsible for around 90% of the country's oil shipments.

The targeted vessels were identified as the M/T Downy, the M/T Stark 1, and the M/T Kylo. According to CENTCOM, warnings were issued prior to the attacks, giving crews time to evacuate the ships. The Pentagon stated that the operation was a retaliation for ballistic missile attacks carried out by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps against US Navy warships.

Adm. Brad Cooper hinted that more extensive actions may be taken if additional economic or military costs are required on Tehran. The strikes took place in the Gulf of Oman, and the crew of the M/T Kylo abandoned ship before it was destroyed entirely.
