US Targets Gold, Cryptocurrency, and Shipping in Expanded Iran Sanctions
The US Treasury Department has expanded its economic campaign against Iran, targeting gold, cryptocurrency, aviation, shipping, and technology in addition to oil. The new measures are part of 'Operation Economic Outcast', aimed at severing all economic links between Tehran and the rest of the world.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned that countries, companies, and financial institutions supporting Iran could face secondary sanctions and lose access to the US dollar system.
The Treasury has identified five key areas for Iran's economy: digital assets, technology, gold, aviation, and shipping. The department has sanctioned nearly 60 individuals, companies, and vessels accused of supporting Iranian oil revenues, weapons procurement, and cyber operations.
