US Towns Resist Crypto Mining and Data Centers Amid Environmental Concerns
Mount Carmel, a town in the US, has become the latest community to ban cryptocurrency mining operations and data centers. The town's Board of Mayor and Aldermen voted on July 23 to prohibit these activities due to concerns over electricity demand, noise, water usage, environmental impact, and the effect on rural neighborhoods.
The decision reflects a broader wave of municipal resistance toward crypto mining and data centers. In recent months, several US towns have introduced restrictions on similar facilities, citing the same concerns as Mount Carmel.
Some residents in nearby Mt. Carmel Township, Pennsylvania, opposed proposed data center development due to fears that large facilities could threaten nearby homes, forests, and community character. They also argued that fines for violating data center regulations were too small compared with the financial resources of major operators.
