US Treasury Sanctions Iran Crypto Industry Amid Growing Evasion Concerns

Share

The US Treasury has broadened its sanctions against Iran to include the country's cryptocurrency industry. The move allows Washington to target foreign exchanges, brokers, and service providers involved in Iranian crypto operations.

The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) issued a determination allowing it to sanction any person or entity operating in Iran's cryptocurrency sector. This includes those facilitating transactions linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

Iran's crypto ecosystem reached $7.78 billion in 2025, with IRGC-linked wallets receiving more than $3 billion during the year. The Treasury claims that the Iranian regime increasingly uses cryptocurrency for sanctions evasion and supports transactions tied to the IRGC.
